You just landed. No residence permit, no local address, no credit history. And you need a bank account yesterday. Good news: it's possible — if you know which banks to target.

Why banks make it hard

Banks are required by law to verify your identity and address for anti-money-laundering (AML) compliance. In theory, this means you need to be a resident. In practice, many modern banks — especially fintech — have found ways around this.

The universal solution: Start with Wise or Revolut

Before anything else — open a Wise or Revolut account. Both can be opened from anywhere in the world with just a passport and a phone number. They give you a real IBAN (European account number), a debit card, and multi-currency support.

These are your bridge accounts while you set up a proper local bank.

🇩🇪 Germany — N26 works without Anmeldung

N26: Opens fully online. No Anmeldung (address registration) required. Need: passport + selfie. Takes 10 minutes.
Wise: German IBAN, no local address needed.
Traditional banks (Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank): require Anmeldung — do these after you register your address.

🇨🇦 Canada — Get SIN first, then bank

Get your SIN (Social Insurance Number) at Service Canada — free, same day, need passport + immigration document.
Tangerine, Simplii Financial (online banks): open with SIN + passport, no branch visit.
Scotiabank, TD, RBC have newcomer packages — visit branch with passport + landing papers.
Before SIN: Use Wise with Canadian account details to receive payments.

🇦🇪 UAE — Wise first, local bank after Emirates ID

All local banks (ADCB, Emirates NBD, Mashreq) require Emirates ID — takes 2–4 weeks to get.
While waiting: Use Wise or Revolut for daily transactions.
Liv. by Emirates NBD: most expat-friendly local option once you have Emirates ID.

🇬🇪 Georgia — Easiest country in the world

TBC Bank or Bank of Georgia: walk in with passport, account ready in 15–20 minutes.
No residence permit, no Georgian address, no income proof needed.
Multi-currency accounts (GEL, USD, EUR) available immediately.

🇷🇸 Serbia — Register address first

Register your address at police station within 24h (white card / prijava boravišta).
Then apply for temporary residence (boravak) — takes 1–3 months.
Raiffeisen, OTP Bank: most expat-friendly once you have boravak.

🇦🇲 Armenia — Almost as easy as Georgia

ACBA Bank, Ameria Bank: passport only, account same day.
Bonus: Armenian banks still maintain active SWIFT to Russia.
No residence required for basic accounts.
