Why "free" never means free
The first thing experienced expat senders agree on: there's no such thing as a free transfer. The money comes from somewhere — usually the FX spread. A service that charges "no fee" but gives you a rate 1.5% below mid-market is often more expensive than Wise charging a visible 0.5% fee at mid-market rates.
Strategy: Wise — still the benchmark
Wise remains the most recommended option in 2026 for mainstream corridors. Fund via bank transfer (ACH/SEPA), not card — cards add 1.5–2% on top. Batch your transfers: sending monthly instead of weekly can cut total fees significantly.
"Wise fee shifts a lot depending on how you fund it. Paying with a card tacks on a couple % extra, bank transfer is way cheaper. On small amounts that's where most of the leak is, not the visible fee."
Strategy: Revolut for frequent small transfers
For expats who can't batch and need to send often, Revolut's subscription model can win. Paid tiers (€7–€14/month) offer unlimited fee-free currency exchange, which can easily pay for itself if you're sending regularly.
Strategy: Brokerage account wires
One of the most upvoted strategies: open a brokerage account (Fidelity, IBKR) with international trading. Buy foreign currency when rates are favorable. Wire for free to your bank. Fidelity lets you hold and wire EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD — at zero wire fee.
What about PayPal and bank wires?
Bank wires charge $30–50 flat — only viable for large one-off transfers. PayPal quietly marks up the exchange rate by 3–5%. Avoid both for regular international transfers.
